Cleanses, Detoxes and Fasts, Oh My

The latest crash diet or cleanse that started in Hollywood and moved its way East faster than Olympian Usain Bolt may not be the healthiest way to lose weight.  In fact, it can be downright dangerous!

When news spread that Anne Hathaway only drank lemon juice for 48 hours before her Golden Globes appearance dieters across the country were abuzz and the so called ripple effect began.

The 48 hour Lemonade Detox, Master Cleanse, Izo cleanse and the hundreds of other fad diets sweeping the nation play into people’s perceptions that a so called magic diet exists. Unfortunately, it doesn’t and those taking up these sort of diets are doing their body’s more harm than good without proper supervision from a physician.

These types of crash diets and cleanses can deplete your body of needed potassium and electrolytes. Over time an electrolyte imbalance can cause liver damage, heart problems and other organ damage. You also don’t get the vital nutrients, macro and micro, that are necessary for healthy living.

This is a high price to pay for only a minimal amount of weight loss that is typically gained back shortly after. Why do so many of these crash dieters gain the weight back? Because your body has lowered its metabolism to prepare for the lack of nutrients coming in from food. So when you resume eating again you will be taking in the same amount of calories as before but with a lower metabolism resulting in weight gain (which is how some people end up weighing more than they did before they started the diet).

But what about all those toxins plaguing our body you ask?  Simple, our body has multiple toxin fighting mechanisms in place – the liver, kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract – that eliminate toxins from the body within hours of consuming them.

So, until that magic diet pill comes along stick to what actually works; eating a healthy balance of all three macronutrients –protein, carbs and fat – and making the bulk of your diet consist of whole, minimally processed foods. If you want lose a few pounds, cut out a few calories from your diet and/or burn more calories with exercise. You’ll lose weight and more importantly maintain a healthy lifestyle.
