Skip the front of the box
The front of the box hides the real story. Get the facts by turning it over and reading the labels. Skip foods that contain partially hydrogenated oils and are full of artificial ingredients. If it takes you longer than 5 seconds to read the ingredients list, it’s a good bet it’s highly processed.
Eat the real thing
Skip the fat free, sugar free foods. These types of foods will just leave you feeling hungry and you won’t get much out of them. If you want ice cream go for the real thing (in moderation). You will feel better and fuller, leaving you less likely to keep eating more.
Out of sight, out of mouth
Stock your cupboards with healthy foods so when the urge for that sleeve of Oreo’s kicks in they won’t even be an option. Of course, you could always drive to the store and buy them, but if you’re too lazy to grab a piece of fruit or a yogurt to satisfy your sweet tooth, then that trip to the store is even less likely.
Nature made vs. Man made
Potato chips aren’t plucked straight from the ground and packaged up. They are processed which takes out important nutrients and replaces them with salt and preservatives. Eating unprocessed and whole foods will pass on the most nutrients and leave you feeling fuller, longer. A good rule of thumb; If it can’t be grown, don’t eat it.
Eat on the slow
The majority of Americans eat on the go and these types of eaters usually consume more processed snacks and fast food. When’s the last time you saw somebody driving down the road nibbling on a chicken breast? Probably never. Life is a rush, but sit down at the family table and enjoy your home cooked meal and the company of those you love. The less stressed and rushed you are, the more efficiently your body will absorb nutrients.
Have your cake, but don’t eat it too
We all get cravings for sweets, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing if you’re prepared. Always keep on hand healthy foods that will help kill those cravings such as yogurt, fruit, even a little honey. But, if you do happen to eat that piece of cake, keep the portion small and don’t stress over it too much.
What’s in that nugget?
Your meat, like all other foods, shouldn’t be stamped, pressed and formed into whatever shape the manufacturer sees fit. Processed nuggets, beef sticks, sausage patties, etc., are loaded with preservatives and salt have lost a lot of their nutrients. Stick to cuts of meat from the butcher.
It’s OK to cheat
Your diet might be one of the few things in life that is OK to cheat on. As long as you are eating healthy foods most of the time, grabbing a slice of pizza or a scoop of ice cream every now and then is just fine. Don’t beat yourself up over it. It’s hard to enjoy life if you can’t enjoy your diet.
