You’ve eaten perfect all week and you finally sit down to reward yourself with a scoop of ice cream. Why not? You earned it! But before you know it half the container is gone. What just happened?! Now before you start feeling guilty and blaming yourself for sabotaging your diet realize this; the fat in that delicious ice cream may have caused the brain to send signals to your body’s cells telling them to ignore the appetite-suppressing signals.

As if losing weight wasn’t hard enough, now you got your brain working against you?! At least that’s what researchers from UT Southwestern Medical Center suggest.

“Normally, our body is primed to say when we’ve had enough, but that doesn’t always happen when we’re eating something good,” stated Dr. Deborah Clegg, assistant professor at UT Southwestern.

Basically, the study shows that one’s entire brain chemistry can change in an instant when eating high-fat foods, thus your brain never telling you your full which results in overeating. Are you rethinking your low-carb, high fat diet right now?

Of course, this doesn’t mean you need to throw your diet out the window completely. Limiting the amount if high-fat foods you consume is the best way around this. And even when you do sit down and reward yourself that scoop of ice cream, it’s best not to grab the carton and sit in front of the TV. Put a scoop in a bowl and put the carton back in the freezer. When you’re done, immediately go brush your teeth. You’ll be less likely to eat anything else for awhile and maybe even prevent a cavity or two.
