Foods labeled organic may be leading people to believe that they contain fewer calories than what they actually have. A study presented at the Experimental Biology conference in Anaheim, California suggested that people who ate organic cookies believed that they contained 40% fewer calories than their non-organic counterparts.
One reason may be that people think foods labeled organic are ultimately healthy for you, the same misconception that people have with foods labeled as “low fat” or “smart choice”. While many of these types of foods may be “healthy”, it’s the amount of calories that are being overlooked which can lead to weight gain.
That doesn’t mean you need to toss out your favorite organic snacks, but rather be conscious of the calories in the foods you eat. Read nutrition labels and control your portions so you don’t unknowingly take in a large amount of calories. If you have no way of knowing the amount of calories in a certain meal then take your best guess and double it. It’s easier on your waistline to guess high than to guess low!
