How To Win The Mental Weight Loss War

Weight loss can be a tough battle and unfortunately some dieters lose the battle before they even start their diet.  It’s not enough that we are presented with tangible road blocks every day, but the mental roadblocks that are between you and your weight loss goals can be just as challenging.  Luckily, there are a few mental tips you can arm yourself with to help blast through those road blocks and reach your goals.

Just Say No
Turning down food, especially when it’s a gift, can be hard to do. Many of us were raised to believe that turning down food was rude.  After all, you wouldn’t want to hurt your mom’s feelings by turning down the cookies she just baked for you.  But, remember that is OK to turn it down.  Especially if your weight and over eating has lead to health complications.  If you still can’t turn it down, then kindly accept and dispose of the food at home. If you’re offered a second helping at dinner choose low calorie options like fruits and vegetables for seconds and skip on the dessert or higher calorie main dish.

Decrease Your Mental Stress
Stress can cause people to not only eat more, but it may also slow down our metabolism and cause us to store more fat.  Reduce mental stress by taking up a relaxing activity that you enjoy like reading or yoga and make it a regular activity in your life.  Check out our post titled Stress eating and tips to avoid it for some great ideas to help relieve stress.

Don’t Clean Your Plate
Contrary to what we were brought up to believe, you don’t need to clean your plate.  If you’re full, it’s better off in the trash than in your mouth.  But, that doesn’t mean you have to waste food.  Save leftovers for another meal or cut your recipes in half.

You Don’t Need Food To Have Fun
Do you really need the large tub of butter popcorn every time you go to the movies or the hotdog and large soda at the ballgame? Of course not.  But it’s almost become the norm to consume food at certain events –family get-togethers, open houses – you name it and foods involved.  It’s this line of thinking that can lead to weight gain.   However, you can help keep this under control by taking a small healthy snack with you to movies or games and instead of always having family get-togethers around the dinner table, try enjoying their company while on a walk or organize a fun game you can all play together.
