Steamable Vegetable Bags

An excellent way to get more veggies in your diet is to try out frozen vegetables in a steamable bag.  Green Giant is a popular option with their All Natural Steamer bags that come in virtually every type of vegetable that you can think of.  Or stop by your local Wal-mart and pick up their Great Value brand steamable frozen veggie bags for around 99 cents each.  They only take about 5 minutes to steam up in the microwave.

Where to buy: Wal-Mart or any local grocery store should carry them.

I don’t understand how steaming vegetables in a bag is better than cooking them in a microwave-safe container. Isn’t the only difference that you cook the veggies in the bag, *then* pour them into a bowl, rather than pouring them into a bowl and then cooking them? It seems to me that same steps are involved, but in a different order. Also, frozen veggies in “steamable” bags cost more per ounce than the same veggies in traditional bags. If we pay more, what exactly are we getting for the extra money?

I think the entire point of the “steamable” bags is that they are designed to create steam – so you are in effect actually steaming the vegetables – rather than just dumping them in a bowl and microwaving them which creates no steam. It could just be clever marketing. Either way, just do what you prefer, as long as you’re eating your veggies! :)
