Q. Can chewing sugar-free gum help me lose weight?
A. It may do just that, according to a study conducted by University of Rhode Island professor Kathleen Melanson. The study concluded that chewing sugar-free gum may help to reduce caloric intake and increase energy expenditure.
The subjects chewed sugar-free gum for a total of an hour in the morning and resulted in eating an average of 67 fewer calories throughout the day and expended about 5% more energy than when they did not chew gum. Of course, chewing gum should be done in conjunction with proper diet and exercise for weight loss.
